Adjusting of Smart Release / Coasting Feature on Schwinn AC Sport and Performance Bikes

How to Test and Adjust Smart Release (SR)

A. To verify if the SR is tensioned properly

a. Get on the bike and start pedaling

b. With flywheel turning at a moderate speed and low resistance, try to pedal backwards

c. If SR is adjusted properly, you will be able to stop your feet with a moderate amount of backward pressure, and the flywheel will spin for approximately another 1-2 rotations

d. If the flywheel continues to rotate more than about two rotations, it is too loose and needs to be Tightened

B. To tighten the SR

a. You will need the smart release tool or a long #2 Phillips screwdriver

b. Position yourself in front of the bike so that the sprocket/SR is on your left side

c. Rotate the flywheel until you see the hole that is drilled into the black ring of the SR

d. Insert the Phillips screwdriver into the hole and grasp the top edge of the flywheel with the other hand

e. Rotate the flywheel forward/down and/or rotate the screwdriver up

f. Tighten the SR to a very firm hand pressure – it is important not to over-tighten the mechanism, you should never use excessive force

g. Get back on the bike and verify SR is working correctly

C. To loosen the SR

a. If you over-tighten the SR so that it does not release properly and you want to loosen…

b. Reverse the steps in section B:

i. Insert the screwdriver into the hole and grasp the top edge of the flywheel

ii. Rotate the flywheel backward/up and/or rotate the screwdriver down

iii. Get back on bike and verify SR is working correctly
